Formspring Question #362--Voter Enthusiasm Edition

Why do you think turnout is so far down everywhere except SC. I know people aren’t enthused by Romney, but conservatives weren’t enthused by McCain either and it is way down from 2008.
Voter turn out did not drop from 2008 numbers until after the South Carolina primary:

IOWA CAUCUS
2008...............118,696
2012...............121,479

NEW HAMPSHIRE PRIMARY
2008...............239,315
2012...............248,448

SOUTH CAROLINA PRIMARY
2008...............445,499
2012...............603,856

FLORIDA PRIMARY
2008...............1,949,498
2012...............1,672,352

NEVADA CAUCUS
2008...............44,315
2012...............32,961

MINNESOTA CAUCUS
2008...............62,837
2012...............47,801

COLORADO CAUCUS
2008...............55,845
2012...............65,535

MISSOURI PRIMARY
2008...............588,926
2012...............251,868

TOTAL VOTE SO FAR
2008...............3,504,931
2012...............3,044,300

Something happened in between the contests in South Carolina and
Florida. Perhaps Newt Gingrich’s big victory him the Palmetto State made him into the Not Romney choice and that was unsatisfactory. Maybe the extremely negative campaign in Florida turned voters off both Mitt Romney and Gingrich.

The latter seems likely. The only post Florida victory for Romney has been in Nevada. His win there was due to the blind devotion of the heavy Mormon population, but could not be credited so much to other Republicans. He and Gingrich both lost badly in the Colorado, Missouri, and Minnesota sweep by Rick Santorum. One might guess since few outside the catholic voting block support Santorum, he won as a protest against the ascendancy of Romney and Gingrich.

The bottom line is republicans do not like any of them. The distaste for the candidates is probably what is motivating this fantasy of a brokered convention in which Jeb Bush or Bobby Jindal is going to come riding out on a white horse and in shining armor to defeat Barack Obama.
