The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy of Rick Perry's Strong Ad

Everyone has already seen this Rick Perry ad over the last few weeks, but bear with me here. After viewing the appeal to Christian voters when the ad was freshly released, I know waiting a while before commenting would make for an interesting comment on the general reaction. My patience bore frruit. The ad turned out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The main point of the ad is that perry believes Christianity is under assault by cultural and political forces, so much so that he believes his is being brave by confessing his Christian faith. The general critical reaction to the ad has been becomingly funny. Progressives and secular critics have mocked Perry for believing he is brave to admit he is a christian in a country which 85% od the population claims to be as well, then proceed to attack the stances he takes because of his Christian beliefs. Said progressive and secular critics engage in these attacks without the slightest hint of irony.

It should come as no surprise Perry thinks he is taking a brave step by putting his faith out there. As I wrote earlier this week in regards to Tim Tebow, the self-appointed gatekeepers of American culture are not happy about sincere professions of Christian faith. Tebow is an even better example. All he is doing his publicly demonstrating his faith, and look how lambasted he is for it. Perry is out there declaring homosexuality un-Biblical and warning that a lack of spiritual influence will rot away values. To my knowledge, Tebow has not declared anything so controversial. Even his famous pro-life commercial was a subdued affair. He is simply walking the walk. he reason he ought to be considered as brave as perry for doing so is lost on the critics who are making it a brave act in the first place.

Irony makes my world spin, and I am…well, not glad necessarily that anti-Christian clueless critics responded to Perry’s ad exactly the way I thought they would, but it is nice to know our intellectual and cultural superiors are such predictable souls.
