Formspring Question #219--Sword and Sorcery Edition

It is clear you are a sci-fi fan. How do you feel about fantasy? If you do enjoy the genre, do you have any notable favorites (books, movies, tv, etc.)?
I am picky about fantasy. I certainly do not get into it like science fiction. While I try to seek out good science fiction, I do not mind occasionally being mindlessly entertained by a radiation makes giant spiders movie or a Lost In Space rerun. But when fantasy is bad, it is a chore to get through.

What is good? Neil Gaiman in general. I really liked American Gods and Good Omens. Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. Peter David’s sir Apropos of Nothing novels were mildly amusing, but self-indulgent. He has long since lost his touch as a writer. That is about it. No Harry Potter. I know, I know. Everyone has read Harry Potter except me. I can live with that.

Movies? Pan‘s Labyrinth is very good. The Princess Bride is highly quotable. Does Monty Python and the Holy Grail count? I have a lingering childhood attachment to the original Clash of the Titans. not much else.

Television? I cannot think of anything. I have seen a handful each of Hercules; The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess, Roar, Beast Master, and Legend of the Seeker a handful has more than sufficed.

It would not be accurate to call me a fan of fantasy.

FTR, I haven't touched Harry Potter either...and actually Jamie it only sold 1 billion copies or something, so that leaves 5 billion others who haven't read it either.

I did see part of the first movie once. Yawn-o.

The Beast Master (the book) was a pretty decent piece of sci-fi. They took the main character completely out of context for the sword and sorcery movie and the TV show it spawned.

I really enjoyed the book.
