Egypt: Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire

Hosni Mubarak finally resigned today. Millions cheer in Egypt, but few appear to have stopped to realize what has happened is a military coup. Already the Military council has fired the Cabinet and suspended Parliament. Such moves are not democracy in action. The situation is cause to remember the only line in Revenge of the Sith worth remembering: See, you thought I was going to post Darth Bader screaming, “Nooooo!” but I was way more profound than that.

Egypt is an ancient country with no history of freedom. It has been ruled by pharaohs, foreign empire, military thugs, and presidents for life for thousands of years. I do not hold out much hope the Egyptians even know what freedom is, much less how to achieve or hold onto it.

Even under the best of circumstances, do not expect the new government to be a strong United States ally no matter how much praise Barack Obama heaps on himself for his role in bring 'freedom" to Egypt. The Arab street is fiercely anti-American and anti-Israel. There will be some tough days ahead.

Diplomatically, the U.S. is between a rock and a hard place. We need Egypt to be our ally because of our relationship with Iraq and Iran.

And since the U.S. has been a supporter and friend of Mubarak, how can we now say "Okay, we'll support he military regime!"

Sucks being stupid and overly involved with other countries business.
